Turmeric!!! Yes, a TV star indeed and worthy of all the honors. I was thrilled to be there with turmeric, in it’s shining moment. Yesterday I was a guest on  a new healthy cooking show for the Veria Living Network. The episode was all about our friend, turmeric. I contributed a turmeric dessert. Yes, a bit of an unlikely use for this golden hued spice, but oh my oh it was a delish addition.

I will certainly alert you all when the show is set to air (most likely sometime this fall.)

Turmeric is a powerful, powerful food. It’s what I like to call a functional food, it’s uses go beyond culinary into medicinal. There are over 24 clinical trials espousing the benefits of turmeric including it’s potency as an anti cancer agent, a strong anti inflammatory and an excellent source of antioxidants. The active compound in turmeric is called curcumin.

Golden Goodness

Turmeric is what gives curry it’s yellow hue, and American mustard it’s ubiquitous color. As for flavor, it is a bit earthy with a peppery undertone. I find the flavor quite pleasant. It is super easy to add turmeric into just about any dish. Add a teaspoon when you are sauteing your dark leafy greens, a pinch in your eggs, a dash in your salad dressing, any where and everywhere! As for variety of health properties and potency, this a spice that should be in your cupboard, and used over and over again.

Recipe of The Week!

The Recipe of The Week is what I shared on air yesterday: A spiced turmeric ice cream. It is made from a base of frozen bananas. A super simple recipe that takes minutes and doesn’t require an ice cream maker.  The offers a great step by step tutorial on making this one ingredient wonder. You can check it out here. Once you master the base the flavor variations are endless.

I am grateful, so so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way the past few months. TV is a fun place to be, I sure do hope I can continue to “be there.”

Turmeric “Ice Cream” (Frozen Banana Treat)

Level: Super Easy

  • 3 bananas
    frozen solid
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut milk
    full fat
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of turmeric
  • a pinch of cardamom, ground
  • a pinch of ground clove

  1. Place bananas in food processor (they must be frozen firm) process until crumbly
  2. Add additional ingredients. Process until smooth. You may need to scrap down sides of processor a few times. The finished product will resemble soft serve, or if you would like it firmer place in the freezer for a few minutes.
  3. Top with items of your choice. My favorites are: pistachios, dried cherries, coconut, and whipped coconut creme (recipe here, but eliminate the bourbon and add a pinch of cardamom)
Variations: You can use the banana base for any ice cream, the coconut milk is optional and add whatever flavors you like. I love chocolate peanut butter, or chocolate mint.
